Purple clad nutjob David Icke believed that the royal family are alien lizards in people suits, not sure that qualifies as a theory though seeing as it was just him.

So this must be the most bizarre theory ever.

Ok so if the world is flat then why hasn't anyone driven from one corner to the other and jumped off?
Wouldn't we all be in daylight at the same time?
Why have we got arched rainbows?

I can not believe how many people are actually taking this seriously

Some people will say ANYTHING to get fame. Water is flat... to the earth. As long ago as Galileo they knew the world is a ball. With the new found telescope watched ships sail over the horizon. I trust Cox.

It's simple in it, get in a car, boat or plane and get to corner to corner to prove the point

It is staggering.

There's some guy who believes this nonsense who's actually building a rocket to blast himself into space so he can see for himself that the earth is flat...

Flat Earth? One man's rocket mission

They're just bloody contrary bastards, I reckon. They can't possibly really believe that, surely?

It is a property of the conspiracist's mind that if you believe one conspiracy you're likely to believe in others. It becomes a self-supporting, fact denying world-view.

I am fascinated by the psychology behind it.

Flat earthers tend to claim no one's jumped off the edge because the world is under a dome or in a giant crater, and we aren't all in sun light at the same time because the sun and moon are within circling within said dome. Of course neither stands up to any scientific rigor but hey it's also NASA that that speared the lies about the earth being a spherical while the US marines patrol the edge of the dome, or history it also doesn't stand up to history since many ancient cultures knew that the earth was round.

This Greek demonstrated that the earth was round in the 3rd century BC. He also estimated the earth's circumference to within 10% of the actual figure.

But.

We're preaching to the choir - we need a conspiracy theorist to explain why we're all wrong

Sadly before I had the good fortune to find my gorgeous Linda I dated another South American. Now she liked and believed theories. Ones like that the earth has had aliens visit and that Kenney was assassinated by same aliens. Now her mentality was that I was narrow minded because I DIDN'T believe these theories, whereas I know I'm open minded because I trust the facts and make my own mind up.

I live in Glastonbury, which is a bit of a hive for loony beliefs. Last summer I was at a party and found myself chatting with an American who was a bit like Fox Mulder in his insistence that everything I knew was wrong.

His opening gambit was about how the theory of evolution was bollocks as humans were apes that were genetically enhanced by aliens.

I suggested a few choice examples of evolution in action and he simply told me that I was repeating the Western scientific conspiracy.

We had a very interesting chat
