Not sure if I have this quote right but... "In a world stripped of god faith is attached to conspiracy theories".

Interesting idea.

My personal belief is that people cling to conspiracies because they need to believe that someone's in control, they can't accept the world as a random, accidental, careless and directionless place where bad things happen for no particular reason or just plain incompetence.

They need someone to be pulling strings to make sense of it.

imo

Am I the only one that knows that the World is a disc, supported on the shoulders of 4 elephants who are in turn carried on the back of a giant Turtle, swimming through space.

Flat square Earths? spherical Earths? What nonesense

It's no good, it's turtles all the way down.

No you dafties.
The turtle just swims through space with it's giant flippers. Some believe there may be other disc shaped worlds out there on the backs of turtles all swimming back to their nesting grounds.

Voyager could've found out but we sent it the wrong way. Anyway scientists keep it very hush hush cos who would be live such a ludicrous theory.

Is the moon actually just the turtles egg captured in it's gravity? Now that's a conspiracy theory

I wondered as a kid if atoms were just small planets, and the atoms they were made of are even smaller......

Yes, I believe they do

I have a conspiracy theory about conspiracy theories - some are so ridiculous (such as our FE friends) that they are obviously nonsense. The fact that people purport to believe in them, suggests that you have to be a bit mad to buy it. Fair enough for Flat Earthers or David Icke fans - but what about the idea that America's government were complicit in the murder of one of its Presidents (for example)?

Are the Flat Earth/lizard people nutters paid/encouraged/masterminded by the world's elites, to enable them to suggest that anyone who believes in something that can be labelled a conspiracy theory is a fantasist? :hmm:

Makes yer think, dunnit? Eh? Eh?

Even worse. What if we are really tiny, a part of some celestial schoolchild's science project, it added some goop to see what would happen, put us in it's wardrobe and forgot about us?
Now billions of years later it's ready to move out of it's celestial parents universe and into a new build universe of it's very own and it's mother has a clearout and finds us in the bottom of this wardrobe and cries "Oh my goodness, it's gone mouldy" and throws us into the nearest black hole?

Just what if?

Your question, albeit obliquely, is whether or not some conspiracy theories are true?

There is a thing as factual chaff. The idea is to spread so much rubbish and false truth it's hard to see the real facts.

Oooo I like that and it is plausible too.

If the Government feed the nutters appetites with more and more conspiracy theories and the rest of the world ridicule the conspiracy theorist nuts...... then when the Governments do, do something underhand they can feed it into the conspiracy theorists system and we continue to think they're nutters .

You sir have a devious mind and should never be allowed in power

Just remembered the film with Mel Gibson. Maybe we are not so much right or wrong, maybe half way between... after all look at Trump, a man who uses these over or underthinking ideas to manipulate and gain control.

I lose the will to live, well, read at any rate... if you can't tell me why, if it's so damn important, can't you tell me what the hell is going on in a paragraph at the top AND THEN I'll decide whether or not to read your drivellings...

There's tonnes of this stuff

Well, no. I was more worried about how easily the phrase can be used to shut down an argument.

For example, during the Labour anti-semitism row, I pointed out to someone that the Board of Deputies (the organisation that was leading the accusations against Labour) was an organisation that had a vested interest in keeping a Corbyn-led Labour out of government (e.g. a CEO with links to Blair, huge donations to the Conservatives by leading members etc.). I was immediately called a conspiracy theorist. This completely negated any further points of view I tried to put forward.

And I got called an anti-semite, of course
