Today, Remembrance Day we should all take a moment to remember the fallen and the brave men and women who fought and died in wars that spilled so much blood.

May we remind ourselves of our fortunes of being free, and enjoying freedom - made available by the sacrifices of so many.

LestWeForget-BW.jpg

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Agreed although I’ve been reading a short documentary about how OTT it’s becoming and commercialised it is. Very sad. A great parody account on Twitter was mentioned too, who posts some of the crap people are doing about it. Celebrating more than mourning.
But it’s good to see people remember and not forget the sacrifices by our Armed Services for you and I.

Agreed. When they put a poppy on the cookie monster, things happen have gotten silly.
My grandfather fought against the type of evil that wanted to force people to wear badges that denote their loyalties. I've chosen to honour him and his comrades, this year, by exercising my right not to wear a poppy.
That doesn't mean I have forgotten their sacrifice, or that of many brave men and women.

Valid point of course but an action I disagree with. ( you know me :D ) But definitely valid.

Agreed, and I know. (y)
Was reading about Stalin/Stalinist Russia (bit of fun for bedtimes) and you do realise that the UK lost about 450,000 dead people in WWII.

Russia's casualties were in the region of 20 million.

For every division Rommel was using to chase tanks around the desert, there were 15 pinned down in vicious attrition on the Eastern Front.

Lest we forget.

Wouldn't have been able to have the freedom without our forefathers. The Ultimate Sacrifice.
Sadly, we are destined to always destroy each other Joe. It's in our blood and will never change as long as we always possess the same mentality.

Yes I do. As those who know me personally will testify to, WWI and WWII and in fact recent history wars, is something I have a very keen interest in and humbly said, a relatively (said loosely) wide knowledge about.
It is all a travesty, but there's things we all have now that wouldn't be possible without all these sacrifices. As I do each year with this thread, I always ask we think of all sides and all people lost. That includes Germans too. They were soldiers doing their job. Bless them all and Lest We Forget x

Outside Petersberg are a series of low hills where, after the siege of Leningrad was lifted in '44, they piled and buried the dead, 10,000 at a time.

Those casualty rates equate to 40 dead Russians for every dead Tommy. We can't image it in this country.

It's interesting what you say about "things we have now not being possible without those sacrifices" but I was thinking about this the other night - if the war was fought and lost on the Eastern Front, and if (despite his colossal blunders early on) we accept that no country aside from Stalin's Russia could have defeated Nazi Germany, then our precious 'freedoms' hang from the bloody sword of Soviet repression.

If you catch me.

It's probably a bit deep.

We observed the silence. My children have had assemblies this week on remembrance also.
Today we wrap up warm to go into town for the service with 2 of the children being in the parade. This is close to our hearts and have also been to the arberetum to lay poppies where there grandad name is.
The arberetum is a place where every service man or women since ww2 has died is on show and a very solume place.
Least we forget x
