I’ve had a beard since 2012; occasionally before, but constantly since then. Grew it after we lost my father - it’s a jewish tradition not to shave for a month after a family loss. Several someones told me I looked good with it… so I tried it, and decided to keep it. (Besides, anything that covers up some of this mug is a good idea.)So guys you all growing a moustache in support of men’s health.
I’ve never heard of that tradition before. Why not shave if you don’t mind me asking.I’ve had a beard since 2012; occasionally before, but constantly since then. But no, if I didn’t have a tache and beard, I doubt I’d do it just for that.
As so often with traditions, there are many alleged reasons, and each person will claim their reason is the true one. However, there are as many jewish traditions during mourning as there are in any other sphere of jewish life. People are buried with the minimum of fuss (there’s no music at a burial for example, and the service takes place at the cemetery, not inside a synagogue); mourners don’t attend parties nor celebrations, do not shave nor cut their hair, and do not even listen to music. At a house of mourning, during the initial week of mourning, all mirrors are covered up...I’ve never heard of that tradition before. Why not shave if you don’t mind me asking.

Small digression, re Jewish traditions.
My favourite one: almost the only things people know about Jewish weddings are
Where did that tradition come from?
- they take place under a canopy, and
- the wedding ceremony ends when a glass is broken by the groom stamping on it, to cries of mazeltov from everyone.
The official reason is to remember the destruction of The Temple, so that even in the midst of joy, you remember.
The unofficial reason is that you drink a wedding toast out of the glass, and then destroy the glass so no lesser toast can be drunk from it.
The entirely unofficial reason is that it marks the last time the groom gets to put his foot down over anything.
So guys you all growing a moustache in support of men’s health.
You’d look like Tom SelleckNo, I hate going without a shave. I did try once but it just felt itchy (or maybe I had fleas), whatever the case it's not for me
