While we're on a roll with the more political type threads,I thought I would ask opinions on the rejection of the free school meal plan for underprivileged children. The treasury has claimed that no additional funding was requested and people from everywhere are offering support to feed any children who may go without otherwise. So is it up to the government to step up and help or should other options be available?

well the question is Do you want your tax money to make sure kids definitely have food OOORR spent elsewhere... most foodbanks if i remember right only let you go once or twice they cant afford to help more than that.

I read that too.And it is a lovely heartwarming story and shows there are good people around. But the bitch in me still spotted the top range fibre optic router in the background and the mention of a partner.X

Shouldn't kids definitely have food regardless of whether or not the government funding is there? People have shown that the government don't have to get involved but my argument is why has it taken a national uproar and media coverage for people to do this? Why has there been no support last year, the year before etc.No one was offering food in restaurants last year, well not that I know of anyway x

How often ????
ahh good, i don't know about now but at least last year or the year before when my mom hadn't retired form social services she was having big issues getting food for families struggling. most of the schemes can that you can be put on when you are having issues do take a while to put you on and that's even when you are basically missing meals to try and feed your kids kind, and like i said foodbanks are meant to be very short term. i do think it will be worse now since well more joblossess and foodbanks would be struggling more

Unfortunately we have seen this first hand with a family we know... the dad did a bunk left the mother with the kids she works 2 jobs but still can't afford everything.... every week I go out and buy in extra food to help as best I can... its nothing to me maybe 60 or 70 quid a month but every little helps ... I hate that this is an issue in the UK... because let's face it.... it bloody shouldn't be.... gets me so pissed off.... Dan

no not everyone can afford to live and feed thier kids not saying there arnt some people wasting money but there are other who cant afford to feed themselves or their kids, or they have to choose between heating or food. People can help but then it comes to paying yourtaxes and then paying more to make sure pther families dont starve and not everyone has the motivation to constantl feed other families

Torn over the whole issue tbh. No matter what, kids shouldn’t be going hungry.

That said, the Gov have stated clearly that they’re supporting local authorities- meaning it’s down to local councils to help their communities.
So where’s the money going then?
A Labour MP stated that it gets lost in bureaucracy- erm then you need to sort your shit out then don’t you.

Minimum wage didn’t help us. It put very skilled workers into a trap of low pay. Created a divide.
Is it down to the state to support people for their life choices?
So many questions. Very difficult subject. X

But then again no matter why they don't have food, the fact that they don't is an issue. I mean i dont have kids and dont plan to but at the MInimum, i think the money i pay for my tax should make sure all kids are fed/warm/safe. if giving money to the parents with benefits dont work then create other services to make sure this minimum is met and dont give that part of the money to the parents.

and the fact that money gets lost should get people arrested fired and maybe shot specially when its for stuff like this

They should over turn the decision, no child should go hungry.

I do believe people don’t manage their money properly as was a normal thing to do in the past , they still want all the fancy phones ,tv’s ,interweb , clothes .... state handouts don’t help in they don’t install a work ethic , lots cannot earn what they get in benefit so why work .....
when I was a kid I remember my parents not eating just to make sure us kids did ....
