Look, let's face it, the majority of our members are British and there's nothing us Brits love to talk about more than the weather - and I think this amuses or overseas members no end

So, let's stop skirting around the issue and have a dedicated thread for our meteorological arch-nemesis!

Depends on where you are...

Iceland has had one of its wettest summers on record, you may also remember that Japan had torrential rain & floods before its record-breaking heatwave. Then there's been flooding in Laos, I think?

Conversely - wildfires in Greece, Sweden and California.

Our particular spell of hot weather in the UK is all to do with the jet stream...


But. I dunno. We do love talking about the weather in this country, and it's summer and there's less to talk about maybe or there's more news reported on generally... and then, and then...

...it's almost like that climate change thing we've been warned about for decades.

Hmm.

No many British don't talk about the weather they moan about the weather examples being "it's too hot and my garden's yellow and dry" or "it's drizzling and overcast we never get any sun"

Maybe.

I think it's because although the weather is changeable (if damp) it's not terribly extreme.

We don't, generally have massive weather events - hurricanes, tornadoes, monsoons, 6 months of winter and perpetual darkness, decades of drought, 60 degree+ changes in temperature - it's within very reasonable perimeters. Usually.

And as English people are socially stunted when discussing things with strangers the changeable and the dull if mildly offensive weather provides an easy talking point everyone can agree on.

First rule of statistics - "numbers go up as well as down".

You can't compare 2 years and draw a general comparison, you have to look at data and averages over the longer term... and data shows and scientists agree that the earth is getting a bit warmer and it's having effects that we're not used to.

Perfect weather for outdoor pursuits . Need to look for a sturdy branch on a strong looking tree. Somewhere to hook up our swing

Same as winter...when we get a few foot of snow. I still remember trudging to primary school in a meter of the white stuff.
Yup...schools were still open and the weather was just as bad then xx

Now this is interesting...

You may be aware of the link between the Sun's weather and our own. Basically the sun has an 11-yr cycle of sunspot activity. Sunspots are massive explosions of plasma and energy - bit like a burp - that the Sun does every so often. For centuries it's been understood that fewer sunspots equals cooler the weather on earth. More sunspots means hotter weather and things like auorae...

Still with me..?

So I wondered if we are at solar maximum (lots of sunspot might explain the hot weather).

Nope. We're looking at solar minimum. Which means you can't blame the hot weather on solar activity.

I admit I do love to moan about the weather! And as much as I love the sun, it is too bloody hot! Especially when I’ve got a dog to walk and a bubba. Struggle to find the right time of the day to take the dog out! And I do want some rain for the garden as it saves me a job!!

It can be embarrassing the way we moan about the weather and our country reaction to it. I work in Norway a lot and the amount of snow they get yet they still function normally yet we get a snowflake on the ground and all the airport shutdown

I do agree with how we cope - but we are also not set out as a country to cope with extreme weather conditions! We can only cope with a bit of sun or rain, not monsoons or heatwaves.
