We both shave, Myself shaft and scrotum and trimmed full everywhere else, Mrs A Team Waxes front and back fully !! two main reasons, 1) its cleaner, and 2) You feel closer at those more intimate moments, Its a very mixed bag of worms this question, We are also Naturist's, so for us its becoming a more common thing to do, as its also a fashionable thing, however, do what your comfortable in your own skin with !! its YOU that has to maintain it once you start Lol x

As for aesthetics, meh it's personal choice/preference. I do prefer it and we are both either very neatly trimmed or shaven at varying times.
It's fashionable yes, but also some prefer the more 'retro' thing of being unshaven.
In all, it's personal choice and you will find that any prospective meets you may have @SimonP - will usually either state on their profile what they prefer, or will mention it to you in passing.
That said, indeed it's you that has to keep on top of it when you start.
I've cut myself many many times as I'm sure a lot have too.
