Not to put a dampener on the thread today would have been my mum’s birthday , she smoked all her life and it’s always good to see people trying to give up ...
Well we watched my Dad the same way and we couldn't carry on and end up dying a young age, it's tough but determination will get us through, between us we have been smoking all our adult lives and we feel amazing, we'll never go back to it. Happy birthday to Mum, where ever she may be

Hmm.
Well, my dad is dying a slow and very uncomfortable, painful, horrible death. Why? Smoking.
He’s already had bladder cancer, he’s suffering from COPD and has severe bowel cancer. Has a tumour for which they cannot do anything to help.
We found out yesterday that all they can do is make him comfortable in as much as there are no further options available. Which we knew anyway really, just had it confirmed yesterday.
All because he picked up a smoke.
I started aged 11. That’s 30 years of smoking.
It’s been 3 weeks and I’ve not had a single smoke since. In fact I now find the smell of cigarettes utterly repulsive. I can instantly smell it on people and smell it from afar and find it repulsive whereas I used to then crave a fag.
I’m glad I quit. Best thing I’ve ever done. I’ve not gained weight, in fact I’ve lost it. I’m not munching for Wales either. My taste is getting better as is my sense of smell.
In drink I’m not craving fags either.
Winner winner

My Mum had COPD for a lot of years it’s not horrible watching the effects a cigarette can have ....
It’s good you both have made that decision to give up ....

So sorry to hear about your dad, I have been there with my Dad and step dad and it is not easy to watch them in so much pain and not being able to do a thing about it. It truely is heartbreaking. On the plus side well done on the not smoking keep it up

Same. We’re glad we did tbh. Best thing we’ve done.
No it’s not. I’m not thinking about it too much tbh. But am happy to have stopped.
My mother died only a few months back aged 61 from a sudden heart attack. A heavy smoker. I’ve no doubt it contributed to it.
I’ve wanted to stop for a very long time. Not sure I’m out of the woods but I’d rather try than not. x

We have both been through this and we know what a difficult and distressing time it is for all of you. All we can say it make the most of the time left and you know where we are.

I lost my aunt to copd my ex father in law had a tumour on his lung they took nearly half of it away still it hasn't helped chemo radio therapy and now all his body is failing slowly he smoked from 12 to 62 and is suffering the consequences. The only thing i can recommend is to drink lots of water and i used sugar free lollipops to quit I smoked from 13 to 31gave up without patches only had lollys but the cravings will fade Nd the money you save is amazing

Thank you. Obviously I’ve known for some time but yesterday just confirmed really that there’s nothing more they can do. He’s had chemo and radiotherapy etc over the last couple of years but nothing has helped only slowed it down. Which ultimately has prolonged it I guess. We’re doing what we can to make the most of what we have.
Thank you, I know and appreciate that.
Yes, it’s terrible. Sorry to hear about your aunt - sadly my wife lost her father last year to COPD who was a miner. Terrible illness to have and what a way to pass. Awful stuff.
As for your father in law I hope he’s comfortable as best possible.
I’m doing okay tbh with smoking. Feeling great. Drinking plenty of water, slightly more coffee than usual and am suffering some terrible headaches but am under a bit of stress atm so am putting it down to that.
Yeah am putting the money into a Demi John. Wow.

I smoked 25 to 30 a day and i am an asthmatic so was stupid and if i went over in fags i would get an asthma attack of which on a few occassions i was close to hospital addministration due to my addiction and stupidity. We both vape and no asthma attacks apart from one small one which is unrelated to vaping but due to weather change. It is two years since we quit although it has given me odd cravings for tobacco and a couple of times i fell off the wagon and smoked half a ciggy and that tasted and smelled vile. Not smoked in a long long time and i put that down to willpower and vaping. You did it with sugar free lollypops fair play to you and well done

I think also that losing my mother (the bitch that she is) recently, has made me realise how short life is too. Kind of made me think long and hard about a few things. 61 is no age and it’s all genetic isn’t it... so it’s about time. 30 years is a long time to smoke. I don’t want to die the same way as they are.
