Okay guys,
May be a sensitive topic, but what do you feel about Karl Andree, who's 74 and facing 350 lashes in public - in Saudi Arabia, for being caught with 6 bottles of homemade wine in his car?

Initially after being caught - he was sentenced to a year in prison but has served 14 months, the two extra months because the authorities are unsure what to do with him.

He is 74 years of age, has worked there for 25 years (on oil) and sadly his wife had travelled home as she is extremely poorly (dying even?) from Alzheimer's.
He's survived and fought off cancer 3 times, and has asthma.

However, he broke a law in a strict country.. But does that make the punishment right?
Usually such public lashings, last only to about 10-15 lashings before a doctor is called as they deal it so angrily and brutally.
Will this man even survive 350!?

Your thoughts?

It is a strict country and he of all people knew what he was doing but...I think he has suffered enough and second at his age he is unlikely to survive this punishment, I have just heard that after only 10 lashes of this force a healthy man will be in horrific pain and a doctor would be called, how in gods name is a man of this age and with illness get through this ordeal?

My words to Pearls too.. When in Rome.
They are living in the middle ages, and it's worrying..
Indeed, oil money and greed.

Does crime warrant the punishment though?

Difficult one to answer as we have different views in the UK but it's their law whether we agree or not and surely everyone knows you do not take alcohol into SA. The other question is, as with any newpaper headline, just what is the truth behind that headline?

Ahh really? Well it's hardly surprising really, given the circumstances. We put a LOT of money in their pockets, and weaponry - as they do ours. (money) hmm politics.

His sentence was only 12 months prison and not 12 months prison and 350 lashes, no justice x

Interesting, have the Saudi's backed off or were the reports wrong?

Saudi officials say they are baffled by the headlines suggesting that an elderly Briton, Karl Andree, may face flogging for possessing alcohol. They say that was never even a possibility because of his age and ill health.
