It's All Just LGBT History Repeating.....

“The past is a foreign country,” goes the saying, “they do things differently there.” It’s certainly easy to mock – the haircuts, the clothes, the ideas. Take the 1980s, for example; we look back in mock- Tudor horror at A Flock of Seagulls, Alexis Carrington, football violence and disgraced TV presenters. We can also, from our 21st Century towers, snort derisively at the attitudes to gay people that held sway back then. They were considered, at best, loony-lefties only found in ‘that...

The increased 'attacks' on the trans population by certain sections of the press is something I find concerning as these kind of things can quickly snowball and real people living they real lives end up getting physically and emotionally hurt. I'll openly admit from being raised in a strangely liberal environment where I was always encouraged to explore myself (both spiritually thanks to a catholic primary school and very modern church of england vicar and curate and emotionally thanks to my mothers slightly to open family and theatrical uncle) and question and consider everything from as many points of view possible before coming to a conclusion, so perhaps my view on such things are naturally different to most but attacking any group or person for being themselves is a shitty thing to do and says more about the person attacking than the one being attacked.

Also the were the angry butt hurt mums net members that were very upset that labours system of womens only short lists will include those that identify as women, because hey men will just say they identify as a woman to get on a parliamentary short list :palm:.

Yes, I must admit, I was a bit thrown, idealogically, by some feminists making the point that it was just another way for men to control women and that it was somehow discriminatory towards butch lesbians. Then I realised that that was bollocks and, as you say, attacking any group or person for being themselves is a shitty thing to do and says more about the person attacking than the one being attacked.

Sounds like you had a cool childhood (y)

More a weird childhood and difficult at times but for other reasons.

Very interesting - where did that come from?
Actually, there's a more accurate answer to that. The thought struck me a while back while listening to a radio programme - someone said something along the lines of, "yes, they've got rights, but they'll never be normal."* I thought, oh I've heard that before....
Then, you asked me to find something more cheerful for LGBT History Month - and the more I researched, the more I failed  and this idea of the similarity of language kept cropping up. So thank you for that (y)

*Of course, since I've thought of all this, that odious blert Littlejohn has written an article about Tom Daley, saying a gay family will 'never be normal'

I wish I had your skill at writing @meandlis. I found this to be a very informative article.

The world is a crazy place and I don't understand why people can't let others live their lives as they wish, as long as no-one is getting hurt.
If you want to be homosexual, be homosexual. If you want to change gender, then change gender. Etc, etc.... It's no skin off my nose.

Even the toilet situation isn't that complicated is it? A lot of countries have unisex loos. That would solve that problem, although why anybody cares which loo somebody has a tinkle in is beyond me.
