I am mixed race.
My Mother is from Malaysia and Father British.
I have never been to Malaysia but hoping to very soon and looking forward to finding out more about my family.
I have faced racist attacks throughout my life but I think these people are simple lacking in brain cells and have never let it get to me.
Is there anyone here from different race that have been subjected to abuse simply down to race or culture.

Yes, having a slight scouse accent but not from Liverpool it's surprising just how many pathetic comments relating to drugs, thieving, shell suits etc you get. Ok it's meant to be harmless fun but it is amazing that my "perceived" culture can be commented on purely because of my accent.

Put simply; race doesn't exist, racism does.

The idea that skin colour determines status comes from the 18th/19th centuries when Europeans were sailing about, planting flags and stealing countries... and in common with the scientific and rational ideals of their day they classified everything. They looked to explain their own economic & military superiority by creating a hierarchy of 'races' with white people at the top, going down through shades - Orientals, Asiatics... blacks at the bottom.

And this idea stuck. Well, it suited white people very nicely.

Problem is, it's bollocks.

First off, we're all human, not different parts, just a whole. And it turns out that the colour of a person's skin is a really bad determinant of genetic difference as it goes.

For instance, a Zulu from South Africa has - genetically speaking - more in common with someone classically Aryan from northern Europe than they would to someone from Ethiopia, for instance. But the genetic difference in any of these cases is tiny - a fraction of a percent.

Race is a red herring, so to speak. It's a construct.

It stems from fear, ignorance and is learned behaviour - you don't find racism in very small kids, they get it from parents/family.

I didn't really know how far I could go and was trying to be polite even though I could say a lot more. Sadly I find if you are mixed race it's sometimes worse than say if I was fully Malaysian, I have had from Freak to abnormal and worse but we have to simply get on with it and ignore such abuse.

Yes, 'cos you get ignorance and shit from both sides - you're stuck in the middle, neither one nor the other, in people's stupid perceptions

It belongs on the pyre with other outmoded lies such as the Divine Right of Kings, witchcraft, slavery, Creationism, Fascism, Scientology, and the tripe spouted by Katie Hopkins.

:)
I see slavery has been brought up today with Kanye West saying it's a choice!
Is he on something?

It's crazy but yes living in west coast of Scotland with Irish accent isn't the easiest ways to live

I'm shocked that an accent can cause so much dislike x

The sectarianism in the west coast of Scotland is horrendous
They even make sure the secondary schools finish earlier so there's not big punch ups the way there was years ago between the catholic boys n the Protestant (don denom sch)

It's very similar to Northern Ireland in some ways

Yeah it was bad when I was growing up on the outskirts of Glasgow and although you wish it would change it never seems to

it's a sad society we live in racism,sexism,ageism...there's no need. My wife's father has worked for the British foreign office for about 30 years and does 3 year postings in other countries and has married a woman from Indonesia...she is a wonderful grandmother to my 2 kids so very caring. At first i had to teach my 2 kids not to make fun of her accent because i don't like it and now she's a massive part of the family my kids are very protective of her bless em i suppose my point is it's a learned behavior....things are starting to change but my worry is it wont completely change...

OMeffin'G - I assume you saw that??!

Not that I am defending that cretin but I imagine what he meant to say was despite slavery being ended as an institution in the US 150 years ago, its legacy - racism, segregation, socio-economic disparities - still casts a long shadow over African Americans some 400 years since black slaves were brought to the West Indies.

I think what he was trying to get at was that he thinks that some African Americans still use the language and mindset to excuse their inability to get on and so 'choose' to inhabit a world where they are downtrodden, rather than 'choosing' a world where everyone is free to be a vacuous buffoon like him.

I'm not sure if he actually thinks before opening his mouth, really, but it was breathtaking.

i don't even have words for that fool.....
First time I've heard him speak, that vid. He headlined at Glastonbury a couple of years ago but I didn't watch and as I'm blissfully unaware of celeb culture generally he was a disembodied name. Until yesterday.

But, you know. This is post-truth America.

The president of the United States has just confirmed that after months of lying about it he did, actually, pay via lawyers, a porn actress he shagged.

Probably nothing will happen.

People will shrug.

I was gobsmacked.
