As I was just saying in another thread, I don't know what a noun or a verb is and everybody else seems to know. When it crops up in conversation I nod along knowingly without have a clue

And a Bitcoin. What the hell is a Bitcoin? I've never found one but apparently people get rich messing with them

So is there something that everybody else seems to know that you don't and you've never wanted to look like a Tit and ask?

And David Baddiel and Radio 4 think it’s a good idea as well. Baddiel realised he didn’t know ‘obvious’ stuff like ‘how does electricity work?’ And what is bitcoin? How is TV broadcast? What is the IMF? Or Cloud Computing? Great series: David Baddiel Tries To Understand...

Yep, it’s available as a podcast from the usual places. This is the link for iTunes podcast, but obviously there are other places...

Oh, yeah, when I was an FD? I worked for a tv company, so I can confirm that it’s witchcraft.

Not at all... the groove on an album isn’t smooth; there are loads of teeny tiny bumps in it, scored into the master it by a needle vibrating to the original sound; the vibrations cause the minor peaks and troughs. A stylus on a player tracks the bumps as it travels through them, and a neat bit of reverse trickery produces the original sound.

You see I understand the principle, I just don't see how it is possible (bear in mind this is coming from an engineer/electrian)

It cause the surrounding medium to move, think placing your mobile on vibrate and place it on a table. It makes as sound.

So I'm assuming the sound is produced at the speaker (logical thinking I know ). And are we saying that vibrations from the vinyl (kinetic energy), turn into electrical energy to pull in the L & R coils at such incredible speeds which in turn send like an infinite electrical Morse code effect to the speakers which cause the cone(?) to vibrate at different frequencies and speeds which causes air vibrations to turn into infinite possibilities of different sounds?

Yes, in simple terms the disc grooves contain the data, that is converted to an electic impulse by the pickup (needle), passed via the amplifier to the coils which in turn vibrate the speaker cones. When you speak you do sonething very similar, brain has the data, vocal cords vibrate in your larynx so you can speak. The difference is records play a set recording, your brain and mouth, if anything like mine, have a tendancy to really screw things up.

Thank you for the recommendation, but I’m already a listener. I think it’s v good; not quite as good as they think it is, but still very good.

I’ve half a dozen weekly podcasts I listen to, four daily ones (that I end up listening to about half the ones I download) and the irregular ones I listen to whenever they release a new one.
