I'm not a tennis fan either, I'm a rugby fan & player. I don't agree with how Serena reacted, but also think she wasn't as bad as people are making out. The cartoon is distasteful, and I am in no position to say its not racist as I'm a white woman. I think it's best to listen to people of colour on this topic, as it is not something white people would have personal experience of.
Well unfortunately some people with colour use it like a bat!!!!

Serena's behaviour was disgusting, I've seen two year olds having tantrums behave better and they are not a pretty site :D
Sure; I don’t have any problem at all with that view. I’m not sure I agree but it’s an arguable case.

But there’s a difference between having that opinion and expressing it in a way that steps over the line.

If I wanted to criticise, oh, I dunno, the German government for lording it over the EU. (Not saying they do, and very definitely not seeking to turn this into an EU debate :) ) but say I didn’t like their power over the EU.

And a cartoonist drew a cartoon of Merkel as hitler.

The criticism is fine; expressing it like that? Not so much. In my opinion.

Or there’s a problem with Japanese trade tariffs... and a cartoonist drew them with slanty eyes and buck teeth. Personally, I think that’s out of order. And I’m glad it doesn’t happen so much any more. And when it does, fair to condemn the expression of it without the criticism itself.

So it's racist and sexist because it's a caricature of coloured woman?

So it must also be racist and sexist if it were a caricature of white man?

So are all caricatures resist and sexist?

Meh I don't know? Some one drew a caricature of me once with an elongated bald head and a massive fat neck. I should have sued the racist, sexist, baldist, neckist git

When it’s a caricature of black women, yes. (Especially when every black person I know says so)

When it’s a caricature of an individual, not necessarily.

Again, as I suggested earlier, if someone drew a caridature using a racist trope, then yeah, Prisma facie, it’s racist. If someone drew a caricature of, I dunno, a rabbi, and the image drawn was of a stereotypical hooked nose and had them joyfully counting money while cackling, yeah, I’d take offence at the blatant antisemitism.

But is it not just that? A caricature of an individual? Are those not just exaggerations of her face?

Now to be fair to me I do not know who Serena Williams is or what she looks like. Obviously some kind of angry tennis player? :hmm:
