If you love someone that feeling never goes away no matter what in my experience. I still have love for old girlfriends and boyfriends even though we split up years ago and it does not take away from the way I feel about my beautiful wife. Things only go 'stale' as you put it if you let it by ignoring the feelings of the ones closest to you.
