It is in a song and youtube has lots of videos on how to do it, so i guess it is a thing.
To some , at least.

What is the difference between roasted and unroasted?
Does it just make the chestnut shell easier to peal and make the nut firmer?

You can eat uncooked chestnuts but they contain tannic acid so its not good for some people and it goes when cooked ( raw bitter taste ) as for peeling both are about the same to do but when hot take longer as they burn your fingers lol
