Tricky one, as..even though my 12yr old never uses her phone in school...there's been times straight after a school day when shes had to contact me. If there was somewhere safe in school to leave them, i guess this would be okay. But is there anywhere really safe in a high school nowadays to even keep a phone 'locked away'? X

So from today, France are banning mobile phones in schools, to combat bullying and porn etc.
Do you think we should too follow suit? Should we consider banning them too?
Maybe meet halfway and allow kids to have them to and from school, with say, a drop off zone in the school to put their phones safely until after 15:30?
What say ye?

France to ban mobile phones in schools from September

French schools ban mobile phones, as parents say the UK should be next

Our lads school does this they let them bring them to school, but they must leave them with the teacher when they go into class and collect at the end of the day. I think this is a good idea as its a compromise. S xx

All other things being equal, yeah, handing them in when you get to school, and getting them back at the end of the school day seems about right to me, but I don’t have any kids at school, and I don’t know what teachers think about the idea. I can easily see them liking the concept in principle, with individual qualms about specific situations.

So, I’m speaking from complete ignorance of the actual consequences of any ban.

(Have to say that I think the situation and my position - is completely different when it comes to the US. Given the possibility of a school lockdown, hell yes, kids should have their phones to let parents know they’re safe in an emergency.)

Our 16yr old has a phone like every other teenager, he doesn't take it to school and I think all schools should ban them, we never had phones! ;)

We could use a land line but that would have to be after 6 as it was cheaper
Gawd yes; and having to ask permission to use the phone... heh.

Slight tangent but when I went to uni in 1982, deal with my parents was that I’d call them once a week minimum... just so they knew I was alive. My lad went to uni a few years ago... his mum knows what he gets up to from his Facebook and they spoke every day or so.

Scary how things change, we don't have FB so we still use the landline after 6

No, but we should teach the kids how to actually USE them rather than just play with the things.
Our daughter just started secondary and they are /expected/ to use phones for research during the day, learning how to dig for knowledge and information rather than just sitting still like a zombie while its fed to them.
The modern smartphone is a superb tool but, like so many tools, it can do serious damage if handled incorrectly. The answer isn't to ban them, but rather to teach kids to use the things properly!

What ever happened to teaching?
Reading books for research?
We are lucky here as our secondary school don't allow phones on the premises, They have a huge library which our son loves and spends many lunch times in there (y)

Funny thing about this is, I was at school when mobile phones first started to appear (yes they were nothing like the computers in your pocket they are now) and they were expected to be turned off and stored in your bag throughout school hours and it not they were confiscated until the end of the day, which meant the next morning in most cases because of the bus dash, and I can't see why my school ever changed that rule.

We were also expected to be properly dressed with polished shoes two things that seem beyond school children now.

Not sure where to go with this as I am not in the situation where I have a child in school. On one had its a good idea as so many teens are attached to their phones and banning them would definitely make them take note and pay attention to what they are being taught. But again a total ban would also mean they have no contact if they need help because something bad has happened during break times. I don't know how schools work in other areas but schools around here the secondary kids are allowed to leave the premises during lunch time. So maybe a compromise only have their phones only during break times only.
