How Small Can Be Bigger Than You Think!

Many a discussion has taken place between people about the Universe - down at the pub or in a university lecture hall, the subject of the Universe has been debated in relation to its origin, composition, age and size. In this post, I would like to take you on a pictorial journey relating to the size of the Universe and how, through the following images, just how insignificant we can appear to be. Enjoy and be amazed!

If you want to get really spooked about how insignificant you are you should know the Shannon number.

If the universe has 10^81 atoms, then there are more possible moves in a game of chess than there are atoms in the universe. Since life has more choices than chess, every life has an infinitely larger number of possibilities.

It makes you wonder how old (most have now expired) the light we see in those pictures are considering how far that light has travelled. We know it takes 8 minutes for the Sun's light to reach earth (so actually the sun is in the future and we are seeing the past) that in itself should give a slight indication how vast and how small we really are.

Most of the stars we see now, don't even exist.
As you say, the sun's light takes 8 mins to get here. Even a warning system wouldn't help. Not that you could go anywhere

Under the stairs - that was good enough for the goverment to suggest we do in the case of a nuclear attack........ and about as much use

As it explodes, it makes a huge hourglass shape which also acts as a gravitational lens allowing us to see very very old parts of the universe.

It exploded 169,000 to 186,000 years ago. The time it took the light to reach us.

After visiting the National Space Centre last wk i discovered that a new planet had been discovered. Its called Kepler186f and from what they can tell its about the same size as earth and looks the same. Its 500 lightyears away. We visited the Patrick Moore Planetarium whilst at the Space centre.....omg it was amazing. You really dont realise how big our universe is. We are nothing. There has to be other life out there somewhere. Xxx

Earth is pretty small compared to planets and the solar system.. i guess we kinda look like, a stamp on an evelope.. how can all life be packed into such a tiny area? X
