Why am I even thinking about aliens shagging!! Suppose there could be a niche market for it though. Could set up an alien porn site.......even aliens must be pervs right?

You're right - there is a market for alien porn. Recall seeing a short clip of a shagging couple made up and coloured like the Navii from "Avatar" - the man's cock was blue when he started but after a few thrusts the colour came off! And you can always get one of these... Alien Fleshlight Ice

Being serious (for once) Car Sagan said "if there aren't any aliens out there it's a hell of a waste of space." Anyway, they're probably already here among us.

This is the way I see it and as mentioned in the OP.
We are a solar system, we're a solar system in a small galaxy. A small galaxy in a enormous universe filled with other galaxies and with billions of planets and stars.
Millions of universe's within space which is infinite..
For anyone to assume we're the only 'life forms' within such infinity and vastness, is very narrow and closed minded indeed.
:)

Most of the stars we see now, don't even exist.
As you say, the sun's light takes 8 mins to get here. Even a warning system wouldn't help. Not that you could go anywhere :D

And there are millions of (new) stars out there we have never seen because the light has yet to reach us

I've met alien life. Some of the insects in Africa cannot possibly be earthly! :palm:

On the point of aliens living among us, how the hell did someone think up so long ago such common place things as tin foil, cling film, and recently NASA Has announced a breakthrough patch that can be applied to a damaged metal object, that physically rebuilds it with no intervention other than sticking it to it and is now been developed and tested for human use, scarey and too advanced stuff xx

If you want to know a little more, Netflix are running The Drake Equation. One of my future tattoos.

Have they found a cure for the common cold though? No. Science is overrated.
Hmm.
I think it depends what you mean by science. I think things like the combustion engine and heart transplants have been pretty useful. Scientists are always criticised for the things they don't do and not the things they do. I'm quite happy someone developed the phone I'm busy typing this on. Without it I wouldn't have met all of you sexy peeps. X
