Winks are a bit like pings but without the echo. In real life winks are two way moments of communication: on line they are one way only. One can have too many tools and rather like a novice golfer with a bag of clubs, they always choose the wrong one. Heck, God gave men only one tool and a quite a few haven't figured out what to do with it! I'm thinking that your follows and followed by feature is pretty much the same and is much more useful as it isn't ephemeral. Whilst you are specifically asking about winks, the general question may be about promoting more member interaction. I'm inclined to think the more effective form of wink is the chatroom and the chatrooms need to be more front and center: I may be very wrong but they appear to be underutilised.

Not untrue, but if we take your analogy forward, we can have a discussion on the nature of riverbanks. none of the rivers I am aware of are ideal and all are problematic, this one is particularly inaccessible and the horses are easily startled.
