We both have Canons, really like the brand which has never let us down. We have a couple of IXUSs which are easy to use, compact and do everything we want. They keep on bringing new IXUS models out and they range from very cheap to more costly; there's even an underwater one now.

Latest (less than a year old) and current favourite camera is a Canon Powershot G7X, has all the specialist features anyone could need and very compact, but gives better pictures than our SLR. All our cameras can take videos too.

Just google 'camera reviews' and you'll get the Photography Blog and other sites, full of great reviews. Good luck!

There is no simple answer. I have a few pentax and nicon all are good. It will depend on how much you want to pay for starters. I would suggest you go to a camera shop, most will allow to handle the camera and explain all the different features, some you may not want. You might also want additional lens etc. So try a shop, explain what you want the camera for and a good shop will take the time to help you find the right kit for you.

Canon 1300D to start with at least two lenses, a good Telephoto some thing like 70 -135 and the a good wide angle assuming the camera comes with it standard 18-55 lens. this will cover most Wedding type photography or portrait type. If you are going for sports Photos you need a good zoom lens something in the 135 to 500 range. We took a simple photography class that was offered thru Woocher that introduced the basics of framing your subject and the use of different settings to blur the background and to add depth to scenery in photos. If you have a local camera club then I might start there as they will be willing to help beginners in selecting the basics and will have classes to further your knowledge. They also may have deal with camera shops or may even have used equipment for sale from other members. I prefer wildlife and Scenic photography while my wife is more into portrait and events. I would agree the a good camera shop will help you with the basics but you may not get the best prices. I bought my wife her first DSLR from TESCO and then upgraded her to a 1200D from Argos followed by a 80D. I started with a Canon AE-1 film camera and then moved to the EOS Rebel DSLR when it came out ages ago. Each of us has a small compact Digital camera for those spur of the moment opportunities. She prefers a Samsung while I prefer the Canon IXUS model line. Hope this helps. We are by no means professionals, we just love taking pictures.

I use an old Canon D40 I bought second hand of eBay a few years ago not the most advanced one but cost me less than £150 .... just used it in some Welsh forest photographing rally cars ... I have 3 lense the standard lense it came with a 150-300 zoom and a 150-500 I have just bought second hand that was 3 half hundred too big for weddings unless your planning on keeping your distance
Big memory card a must ... think I have taken 1500 pictures in 4days ... haven't checked yet could be more ...
plenty of entry levels out there to choose from ...
Probably no help ...

Unfortunately it's not the camera that takes a great picture but the person behind the lens.
We have all stood and looked at a great photo that has captured our imagination and never once asked ourselves what camera did they use!
We only ever use a mobile phone and Stephen is always getting compliments about his pictures..

As much as that is true , mobile phones will never produce the quality of image that a half decent DSLR will ..

Joking aside
A crap photo is still crap no matter the camera.
A good photo is always a good photo no matter the camera
It's the eye
The subject
The connection
The photographer
That makes the picture..
Having the most expensive paint brushes doesn't make you an artist
I have a great friend in Mexico and all his photos are shot on a mobile. they sell at $300 for A number print.
I have several
His art goes for more and is painted on cardboard
See this one he did for my birthday

I would agree 99.99%of what I take is crap ... even the 0.01% is worthless to any one but me ... a great photographer or artist is great for a reason ...
Sure you'll have a reply but it's fact that image quality is everything to pros that's why they spend tens of thousands equipment to take those pictures and not rely on a mobile ...

A bad tradesman will always blame his tools or have an excuse.
Just saying.
