I have always loved frida khalo.. I mimicked her works and followed them through my fabric designs. Even to this day, 30 years later I am obsessed.
I have several favourite pieces but I have to say that her broken column is iconic.
Painted while disabled in bed she caught the pain and distress of her accident..
She was in a serious bus crash and a pole went right up her vagina and out her shoulder...
Amazing woman.. Died too young but fucked every famous man in her time..
I am so privileged to own two very small but authentic self portraits..
And Salma Hayek played her in the film frida..

The Tate are trying to get one of her peices but as she lived a short while she has very few available. After her death Diago Rivera convinced his billionaire mistress to buy all of fridas art which is displayed in her home... A few peices escaped but not many..
Madonna has one in the UK..

Her work is often on tour but limited amounts.. I went to Mexico city to view everything..What a shame they are not more widely available. Maybe with time, hopefully. I had heard and read about her, but never really indulged in her work. A mistake I will rectify immediately! Thanks for the heads up. Learn something new everyday ect...
It is bonkers.. But based on the landscape of catalonia where he grew up..and his confusion about society and his own turmoilsI know absolutely feck all about art. It doesn't really interest me much to be honest.
I do like Salvador Dali's work cos it's absolutely bonkers (yeah I know, I'm a proper art critic).

Only two of those are Dalis, the B&W one is by Escher (love his stuff)... no idea on the top one tho'...
Other than the Lobsterphone, my fav Dali piece is this room in the Theatro Dali in Figueres in Spain... As you can see, the furniture in the room (including the signature lips couch) align once you climb a ladder and look through a magnifying glass perched atop an elephant. Very funny.
However, I wouldn't want any of those in my house. None are particularly beautiful to me, it's more about the technical aspect, the skill, the vision and what they represent.Of the art I've seen, I think the standout pieces were:
* Picasso's Guernica (stunning on so many levels)
* The Sistine Chapel (arguably THE masterwork of Western art)
* Jake & Dinos Chapman's Hell (destroyed in that art warehouse fire but remade)
In case you're unfamiliar with the last one, it's a series of 9 large glass cases each containing vignettes/models in which 30,000 tiny figures were placed in swastika formation to remind us of the Holocaust but are literally of Hell. It's a mind boggling, disturbing, horrific piece. I highly recommend it.

I stumbled upon a Swiss/Italian/French artist called Felice Varini recently.
He specialises in "anamophic illusions", which means he takes a public space, or room, and using lasers, projects geometric shapes which are then coloured to produce an image that can only be seen from one specific viewpoint.
The technical complications are... very complicated... but the effects are stunning.

However, I wouldn't want any of those in my house. None are particularly beautiful to me, it's more about the technical aspect, the skill, the vision and what they represent.
For something to hang on my wall, I'd prefer a Shepherd Fairy...
